KAVA7. It's been nearly a year since Fire Emblem Three Houses graced our Switch screens, and many players likely still haven't run out of content. The game brought new life to the 30-year-old Fire Emblem franchise, revamping the battle system with battalions and a new class type, and allowing more control over your units than ever with lectures and monastery activities. With all this extra content and essentially three games worth of plot, of course there are a few hidden features and sneaky easter eggs that we missed upon the way. Let's take a look at some of the secrets that may have you booting up your copy of Three Houses once again. Spoilers ahead for those who want to discover hidden content for themselves! 10 Anna's Secret Shop Whether she's acting as a plucky vendor or a guiding hand through tutorials, Anna is certainly a familiar face in the Fire Emblem series. You can purchase items from her before each mission in Three Houses, but some players may have missed her secret shop within the monastery. After the time skip, you're given greater access to Garreg Mach's marketplace. Hanging out amongst some guards is our pink-haired merchant, and if you speak with Anna you'll have the chance to complete a short quest for her. If you manage to find her and help her out, you'll be given access to a secret shop brimming with rare items, including rings and unlimited Master Seals. 9 Mercurius If you're playing with an online connection active, occasionally you'll see a glowing tile that will reward you with XP or a random item when a unit steps on it. It won't take long for players to come across rusty weapons amongst these rewards, which may seem like a disappointing find at first. But don't go throwing away those old weapons just yet. All of them can be reforged into normal equipment, but there's a chance you'll discover some that can be restored into some of the best weapons in the game. One of these is the sword Mercurius, a legendary weapon that has been appearing since the very first Fire Emblem. 8 Quickly Recruiting Sylvain Sylvain is perhaps one of the best-designed male units in the game, but the most memorable thing about him is probably his flirtatious ways. Sylvain is notorious for his unrelenting attempts to charm women, and his skirt-chasing actually subtly impacts the gameplay. When playing as male Byleth, if Sylvain isn't in your house you'll need to work on your Charm and Reason stats before you can recruit him, or at least build up his support rank. Things are much easier for female Byleth though - just speak to Sylvain in chapter 2 and he'll be happy to join you regardless of your stats. It seems not even the professor is safe from Sylvain's flirting! 7 Parthia Mercurius isn't the only secret legendary weapon in Three Houses. Players can count themselves lucky if they find a rusted bow that can be reforged into Parthia, so long as they can afford to give 10 pieces of mythril and 2000G to the blacksmith. In addition to spawning from the glowing tiles that appear during online connection, these rare rusted weapons can also drop during monster encounters. If players are unsure whether the old weapon they found is anything special, you can always press X while it's selected in the menu. Its description will specify if it can be transformed into a legendary weapon such as Parthia. 6 Secret Support Conversations The support system has long been a beloved feature of the Fire Emblem series. Bonding your units improves their stats when working alongside each other in battle, making for some unstoppable pairs when used right. Unless you've played through the game with the same characters a number of times, players will probably overlook certain changes that support ranks can cause. If the Black Eagles win the Battle of the Eagle and Lion, Dorothea will mention she feels left out wished to sneak off with someone to celebrate. Ferdinand will respond by inviting her to tea, and usually, Dorothea will decline. But, if they've already managed to reach B rank in their supports, Dorothea will accept his invitation. There's no telling how many tiny details like this are hidden in Three Houses. 5 Monastery Secret Room The Garreg Mach Monastery might seem quite the sprawling structure, but it only takes a few hours of item fetching and support building for players to get used to its layout. You wouldn't expect there to be many hidden corners players have overlooked, but that's exactly the case for Amiibo owners. In the monastery gardens lies the Amiibo Gazebo, where scanning any Fire Emblem Amiibo can net you certain rewards. In the NG+, scanning an Amiibo here also allows you to visit a secret room called the Holy Tomb. Sothis will be there to gift you the Sothis Shield, a spell that grants your entire team +7 to Resistance. 4 Gradivus The lance amongst the legendary rusted weapons is Gradivus, a powerful weapon with a hit rate of 90%. Each of these legendary weapons requires a Professor rating of A+, which can take hours of fishing, gardening, and faculty training to achieve. One of these rusted weapons exists for each non-magic weapon type. Players can restore a rusted axe for Hauteclere, which in previous games was the signature weapon of Princess Minerva of Macedon. Rusted gauntlets, a new weapon type introduced in Three Houses, can be reforged into Dragon Claws. 3 Hidden Story In Chapter Illustrations At the beginning of each chapter, or in-game calendar month, the player is greeted with a unique illustration. These pictures often depict the weather or activities if the month, with flowers in spring and harvests in autumn, and lend the game a magical, storybook quality. What players may miss is a rather complex story hidden in the details of these illustrations. The story follows the life of a deer and the hunter who orphaned it, including the hunter's eventual conscription into a war. Players should keep an eye on the background and details of these chapter images to learn the ending of this somber tale. 2 Edelgard's Two Paths Even from its title, Three Houses is centered on the idea that the player must choose from three narrative paths. However, if you choose the Black Eagle route, depending on your actions pre-time skip you may be presented with a fourth path to follow. The standard route leads you to side with the Church and go to war against Edelgard, but if you have at least a C+ support rank with her, you'll be given another choice. If you speak to her during Chapter 11, you'll be given the option to go with her and witness her coronation, allowing you to oppose the Church with her for the rest of the game. This dramatically impacts the story and units available to you, so choose wisely! 1 Secret Credits Song Whether you side with the Blue Lions, the Golden Deer, or the Church, the song 'The Edge of Dawn' plays during the ending credits. In all of these routes, Edelgard's ambitions and goals ultimately fail. The Japanese title 'Girl of Hresvelg' mentions Edelgard's surname, and this along with the lyrics suggests the song expresses Edelgard's sorrow from her perspective. If you side with Edelgard, though, an otherwise hidden song called 'The Color of Sunrise' instead plays. This song has no lyrics and considering Edelgard's dreams are realized through this path it feels like a more uplifting note for Three Houses to end on. Thank you for printing this page from Remember to come back to check for updates to this guide and much more content for Fire Emblem Three Houses Eastern and Southern MerchantsThe Eastern and Southern Merchants are unlockable merchants in the game that will sell you rare and uncommon items you canât easily find elsewhere. To unlock them, you have to complete the quest âClearing the Wayâ on the month of the Verdant Rain Moon. This will span almost two weeks; one week for accepting the quest, and one weekend dedicated for clearing the bandits as part of this quest battle. Once done, you should be able to buy stuff from them the following weekend. The Southern Merchant specializes in seeds, meats, and some Gifts while the Eastern Merchants will sell you baits, weapon Repair or strengthening materials, tea leaves, and gifts. Some of their items have limited stock but they do replenish their stock every month. Itâs very important to unlock them as early as you can since their items allow you to maximize the stuff you can do when Exploring the Monastery during your weekend offs. Baits allow you to fish multiple times and earn Professor EXP in progress while Gifts allow you to replenish your studentsâ motivation or increase other charactersâ affinity Support points towards you. Make sure to buy the items you need from them whenever youâre exploring since their inventory canât be accessed from the Battle Preparation or weekend activity selection screens, unlike the other shops in the Marketplace. Anna's Secret ShopAnna's shop is unlockable by completing the quest "The Secret Shop" on Pegasus Moon timeskip. She sells Elixirs, Master Seals, rare accessories, shields, and stat-boosting items. Most of her items can only be bought once except for the Elixirs, Silver Shields, and Master Seals. Nevertheless, her items will help bolster your characters performance and stats. The Dark MerchantThis special merchant can be unlocked by completing the quest "Taking Care of Business" on the month of the Lone Moon Timeskip. This merchant sells unlimited Arcane Crystals for forging/repairing magic weapons, new gifts, rare tea leaves, and rare cooking ingredients. I've yet to confirm if this merchant is available to other routes since I encountered the quest in my Golden Deer route.
Home Opinion Image credit Nintendo Fire Emblem Three Houses is an incredibly fun and frighteningly addictive tactical RPG - it even earned a spot on our best Switch games page. That said, itâs not a true role-playing of controlling the narrative and shaping your character's personality, you take control of Byleth a glorified panderer, and more importantly, a bad professor. All of this is facilitated by the choices presented to you, and itâs the linearity of those choices that make Fire Emblem feel like a test taking illusion of choiceWith a few obvious exceptions, such as choosing your house, the decisions you make in Fire Emblem Three Houses are either right or wrong - not to be confused with good or evil, but simply a pass or fail question. If you choose the incorrect dialogue option in a conversation, youâll lose support points with the character youâre talking to. Receiving support from an NPC means you gain certain benefits when youâre next to them in the field, so your goal throughout the game is to gain the support of your allies.Image credit NintendoWhat makes this so challenging is that the choices you have to make are based on how well you know the character youâre talking to, of whom you literally just met. This game of multiple choice got so frustrating that I gave up and Googled some of the answers because I didn't want to run the risk of reducing the support I already built support points are at stake, the conversations are less about roleplaying your personality, and more about adhering to whatever wild nonsensical point of view the character you're conversing with has. Byleth runs around campus appealing to every student's wacko personality rather than cultivating their own and being the voice of reason, making them an awful of the best examples of this is when there are two students complaining about each other in the Dining Hall. Instead of setting them straight, like a good professor should, the correct choices were to agree with each of their points of view. I told both students, separately, that they were right and that the other student was wrong. Who even gave me my degree? Oh, thatâs right, I donât have example was when Bernadetta, an introvert, was locked in her room, and to get her to talk to me I had to say âHey, what's this cake doing out here,â which was the right answer, but an outright lie. What kind of monster would lie about cake? Nevermind be rewarded for it.Image credit NintendoSome of the choices are easy enough to suss out, but it gets difficult when you're stuck between two equally sincere answers like "You seem a bit down" and "What were you thinking about?" Nothing is wrong with either of them, and both would eventually lead to the same place in a real life conversation, but "You seem a bit down" is the only one that'll net you that matterI recently came off playing The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt, an RPG in which I felt the weight of every choice, whether it was contained to a small tavern or affected an entire kingdom. The Witcher immerses you with every piece of dialogue because your choices not only spice up the conversation, but they affect the overall outcome. Choices in Fire Emblem do neither.Image credit NintendoMost conversations start and end leading to the same outcome, regardless of the choice. Games like The Witcher and the Divinity series excel in doing the exact opposite, which is why theyâre so dive a little deeper, the dialogue choices in Fire Emblem also start and stop with whatever you're shown in the prompt. Your character doesnât bother to expand beyond that one snippet of dialogue in text, nor is there a voice over to help deliver the lines. This is especially jarring since Byleth's combat lines are voiced over. This makes a decent portion of the game feel like a test-taking simulator. And whatâs worse, it doesnât stop with conversations. There are mini-games teaAfter sinking 20-plus hours into Fire Emblem Three Houses, I am knee-deep in the oh-so-epic Tea Party portion of the gameplay - you know, the part where you can invite one of your students for tea and you have to play an arbitrary guessing game to deduce what theyâre interested in talking about.Image credit NintendoWhen you choose to roam the campus in your free time, you can spend activity points to take part in a Tea Party, which allows you to gain more support points than you typically would in a casual interaction - given that you know what your plus-one is interested minigame consists of three conversation starters and one reaction, which acts as a bonus if you pass the first three. I kid you not, I have a text document on my phone filled with correct answers specifically for Tea Parties that Iâve gathered through trial and error - just one character has accumulated 24 separate correct answers, and thatâs only from my personal only does this mini-game suffer from linearity, but it also doesnât deliver on the interesting conversations meant to be had over a cup of tea. Once you select a topic, like âTell me about yourself,â the character youâre talking to replies with a short, predetermined response. So getting to know one of your students or colleagues really becomes just a frivolous minigame with nothing to offer, apart from support points.Image credit NintendoAnother wonderfully crafted minigame is the Advice Box, which is a stripped down version of Tea Party that focuses solely on giving a character unknown at the time advice. Once you fail or succeed, the characterâs face will be revealed. This is almost worse than Tea Parties in that you donât know who youâre advising when they ask a question. Sometimes it's obvious, but other times Iâm driving myself nuts trying to figure out whose broken personality Iâm supposed to be appealing lineFire Emblem Three Houses excels as a strategy game, but when it comes to finding its footing as a role-playing game, it falls so hard that it breaks the immersion. When I say Byleth is a bad professor, itâs not just to be cheeky - Byleth is the sad result of shallow character development. The main character is used only to validate the beliefs of other characters, and while there are key choices that shift the narrative, those ultimately donât change your characterâs personality. Youâre not roleplaying a character of your own device, but one that incessantly has to please everyone; One so devoid of personality that they take on the disposition of the people they interact with. Fire Emblem Three Houses is not a role playing game; itâs a glorified test-taking Switch Games of 2019Nintendo Switch Lite vs. Switch Which One Should You Buy?The Best Switch Games to Play in Handheld Mode As soon as Rami Tabari sprung out of the College of Staten Island, he hit the ground running as a Staff Writer for Laptop Mag. missing-image-4x3 Fire Emblem Three Houses isnât just about being a Professor. Yes, you teach your students and lead them in battles, but you also develop relationships with them. Every conversation and activity can improve your relationships with the gameâs cast of characters. Your relationship with any character is known as a Support Rank, and you need to get it to the highest level to open up a romance option, but only if that character is available for one. Sothis is available for romance, regardless of the gender you play as. Usually, there are a lot of ways to build up your Support Rank with a character. You can give them gifts, fight alongside them, or have tea with them, or many more options. Sothis is a little different due to the nature of the character. You will end up having conversations with Sothis once a month, and if you can choose the correct interactions, it will improve your Support Rank with her. This is the only way to improve your Support Rank with her, so pick your answers very carefully. Pay attention to her personality type, and the types of answers she likes to hear. Sothis usually likes when you are grateful for her help and advice, so that is always a good route to take when talking to her. The ability to pick your wife/husband will appear at the end of the game, based off your Support Rank with various characters. One of the options will just read as â????â, and this is the option you choose if you wish to marry Sothis.
